GRE vs IELTS for Indian students (2026): not competitors but complements. Field-specific requirements, GRE-optional policies, visa nuances, decision framework, and prep sequencing.
GRE vs IELTS for Indian students is not an either/or choice for most applicants going abroad—you typically need both. GRE measures academic aptitude; IELTS measures English proficiency. This GRE versus IELTS 2026 guide explains the GRE IELTS difference, when each is required, and how to sequence prep efficiently for study abroad tests India applicants face.

Not competitors—they are complements
IELTS and GRE answer different admissions questions. Universities use GRE to gauge quantitative and verbal reasoning; they use IELTS (or TOEFL, PTE, CELPIP) to confirm you can study in English. Neither substitutes for the other.

| Visa relevance | Not required for any student visa | Required for UK, Australia, and Canada student visas (approved SELT such as IELTS UKVI Academic). US F-1 visa does not require English proficiency—but US universities require IELTS/TOEFL for admission. |
For UK student visas since 2023, UKVI accepts IELTS for UKVI (Academic) and other approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). For US applications, most schools accept both IELTS and TOEFL; UK and Australia also widely accept PTE Academic. Canadian programs may accept CELPIP in addition to IELTS.
What each test actually measures
GRE Verbal tests high-level English in an academic context—vocabulary in context, dense reading passages, logical sentence completion. It is not a conversational English test. See GRE Verbal Reasoning Explained for section-by-section breakdown.
IELTS tests practical English across four skills: understanding lectures (Listening), academic texts (Reading), essay writing (Writing), and spoken fluency (Speaking). Universities—and visa officers in UK, Australia, and Canada—use IELTS to confirm you can function in an English-speaking country.
You can score 165 GRE Verbal and still fail IELTS Speaking at 6.0—they test different English skills. Prep for both separately.Do Indian students need both?
The honest answer to do I need both GRE and IELTS depends on destination, field, and specific program—not just country. Use the table below as a starting point, then verify each department's admissions page.
| Destination / profile | GRE (typical) | IELTS/TOEFL (typical) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA (MS STEM) | Often required or optional | Required | Many top programs (MIT, Stanford, CMU) are now GRE-optional—see Do You Really Need GRE in 2026? and Universities Without GRE Requirement |
| USA (PhD) | Often required or recommended | Required | Funded PhD programs still value GRE; English test mandatory regardless |
| UK (MSc humanities) | Rarely needed | Required | Most taught master's focus on IELTS and academics |
| UK (MSc economics/business) | Sometimes required | Required | Check LSE, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LBS—competitive programs may require GRE/GMAT |
| Canada | Varies by program | Required | Some MSc Economics and CS programs require GRE (e.g., UBC, Toronto); many MEng programs do not |
| Australia | Rarely | Required (or PTE) | GRE very uncommon for master's; PTE widely accepted for visa and admission |
| Germany | Rarely | Required (or German cert) | TestDaF/DSH alternative for German-taught programs |
Quick checklist before registering
- 1List your target programs
Write down every school and department—not just country. Requirements live on department pages.
- 2Check GRE status for each
Required, optional, recommended, or test-blind? Policies differ within the same university.
- 3Confirm English test accepted
IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo? UK visa applicants need an approved SELT (IELTS UKVI Academic).
- 4US STEM MS with GRE required?
Take GRE + IELTS/TOEFL. If GRE optional, jump to step 5.
- 5GRE optional—decide whether to take it
Strong GPA and research? You may skip. Weak GPA or top-tier targets? A 320+ GRE still helps—see Is GRE Worth It.
- 6Applying to multiple countries?
Take both GRE (if any target requires/recommends it) and IELTS to maximize options.
Decision framework by profile
| Your profile | Likely test requirement | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| STEM MS in US | GRE (often) + IELTS/TOEFL | Take GRE if program requires or recommends it. If optional, weigh GPA and research—see Is GRE Worth It? |
| Humanities MA in UK | IELTS only | Skip GRE unless applying to Oxbridge/LSE economics or competitive finance programs |
| Business MS in Canada | GRE/GMAT (often) + IELTS | Many business schools require GMAT/GRE—check each school individually |
| PhD in any country | GRE (often) + IELTS | US funded PhD: GRE still common; UK PhD: IELTS primary, GRE rare except economics |
| US + UK mixed list | Both | GRE covers US options; IELTS covers UK visa and admission. TOEFL works for US if preferred |
But what if GRE is optional?
In 2024–2026, a growing share of US MS programs—especially in Computer Science, Engineering, and Analytics—have made GRE optional or test-blind. That does not mean you can skip English proficiency: IELTS or TOEFL remains mandatory at virtually every English-medium program.
Test-optional does not mean test-blind. A strong GRE still differentiates; a weak one hurts. Omit if optional and your score would fall below the program's admitted range.Prep overlap & sequencing
Overlap
GRE Reading Comprehension and IELTS Reading both use academic passages. Building reading speed and inference skills helps both. RN Academy RC quizzes train the passage analysis both tests reward.
No overlap
GRE vocabulary lists do not help IELTS Listening/Speaking. IELTS speaking practice does not help GRE Quant. AW essay structure partially overlaps with IELTS Writing Task 2, but scoring rubrics differ.
Recommended sequence
- Start GRE prep (3–4 months)—includes Verbal/reading foundation
- Take GRE first (valid 5 years)
- IELTS prep (4–6 weeks focused)—emphasize Speaking and Listening
- Take IELTS closer to application deadlines (valid 2 years only)

FAQ
Can I submit GRE instead of IELTS?
No. Universities require a dedicated English proficiency test (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or in some cases Duolingo) for admission—even if you submit GRE. For UK, Australia, and Canada student visas, an approved English test is mandatory; GRE does not satisfy visa requirements.
Can I take TOEFL instead of IELTS?
Yes for most US and Canadian university applications—both are widely accepted. For UK student visas, you need an approved SELT; IELTS UKVI Academic is the most common choice. Compare formats in our GRE vs TOEFL guide (includes TOEFL vs IELTS breakdown).
What IELTS score do I need?
USA: usually 6.5–7.0 overall. UK: 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 (IELTS UKVI for visa). Top programs may require 7.5. Competitive US STEM programs often want 7.0+ with no band below 6.5.
Is IELTS easier than GRE Verbal?
Different skills. IELTS Speaking/Listening have no GRE equivalent. GRE Verbal vocabulary is harder than IELTS Reading for most Indians—but IELTS Speaking trips up engineers who ace GRE Verbal.
Do I need both GRE and GMAT?
No—you submit one aptitude test, not both. MBA programs accept either GRE or GMAT; MS programs use GRE. See GRE vs GMAT if you are deciding between them for business school.
