GRE vs GATE for engineering graduates: compare format, career outcomes, GRE optionality, and decide whether to pursue M.Tech/PSU in India or MS abroad.
Engineering graduates often wonder: GRE or GATE? GATE opens doors to M.Tech in India and PSU jobs. GRE opens doors to MS/PhD abroad. They test overlapping quant skills but serve entirely different career paths.

GRE vs GATE for engineering graduates
If you are a B.Tech/B.E. graduate choosing between M.Tech in India and MS abroad, this comparison is for you. GATE and GRE are not substitutes—they gate different application systems. The right exam depends on career geography, budget, and whether your target programs still require GRE at all.
GRE vs GATE — quick comparison
| Factor | GRE | GATE |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Grad school abroad | M.Tech/IIT/NIT + PSU recruitment |
| Conducted by | ETS | IIT (on behalf of MHRD) |
| Frequency | Year-round | Once per year (Feb) |
| Sections | AW, Quant, Verbal | Single paper: subject + GA |
| Subject focus | General (not engineering-specific) | CS, ME, EE, CE, etc. |
| Quant level | High school math + data interpretation | Undergraduate engineering depth |
| Verbal/English | Major section (50% of score) | General Aptitude only (~15%) |
| Score validity | 5 years | 3 years |
| Cost | $220 | ₹2,000 (approx) |
Completely different purposes
| Goal | Take this exam |
|---|---|
| MS in USA/UK/Germany | GRE (if required) + English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo—check each school) |
| M.Tech at IIT/NIT/IIIT | GATE |
| PSU job (ONGC, BHEL, etc.) | GATE |
| PhD in India (IIT) | GATE |
| PhD in USA | GRE if required (GATE not accepted); many engineering PhD programs are now test-optional |
Format & difficulty
GATE (CS example): 65 questions—programming, algorithms, OS, DBMS, TOC, networks, plus general aptitude. Deep undergraduate CS knowledge required. 3 hours.
GRE: General aptitude test—no subject-specific CS. Quant covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation under time pressure. Verbal tests English vocabulary and reading. 1 hr 58 min. Drill GRE-specific question types with RN Academy Quant practice.
| Skill area | Harder in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering subject depth | GATE | Undergraduate CS/ME/EE syllabus |
| English vocabulary & RC | GRE | Dedicated Verbal section—50% of score |
| Speed under pressure | GATE | More questions, more content in 3 hours |
| Analytical writing | GRE only | AW section not tested in GATE |
| General math reasoning | Mixed | GRE Quant is high-school based but data interpretation and logic under time pressure trip up many engineers; GATE GA includes probability and permutations at similar difficulty |
Does GATE prep help GRE?
Partial overlap in quant reasoning. GATE General Aptitude covers probability, statistics, and permutations—topics also tested in GRE Quant. If you have done GATE prep, you have a head start on GRE Quant. Engineering grads often find GRE Quant manageable after GATE—but do not assume it is automatic.
GATE prep does NOT help GRE Verbal at all. Indian engineers consistently underperform on GRE Verbal—that is the section that needs dedicated prep regardless of GATE background.Verbal guide: GRE Verbal Reasoning Explained. Close the Verbal gap with RN Academy vocabulary drills and RC quizzes.
Which path should you choose?
| Choose GATE if... | Choose GRE if... | If you're undecided |
|---|---|---|
| You want M.Tech in IIT at low cost | You want MS abroad with global career options | Take GATE in Feb, GRE in summer—compare results before committing |
| PSU job is your target | STEM OPT / international work experience matters | Keep both options open but manage burnout carefully |
| Family budget is tight | Family can support ₹50L+ or education loan (assistantships may cut cost 50–100%) | Research scholarships and TA/RA funding before ruling out abroad |
| You prefer staying in India; R&D roles often need M.Tech | You want US/UK/EU exposure; MS is typical for US tech roles | Map industry preferences first—India PSU/R&D vs global tech |
Quick decision flow
- 1Want to study abroad?
Yes → GRE (if your target programs require it) + English proficiency.
- 2Want a PSU job?
Yes → GATE. GRE scores are not used for PSU recruitment.
- 3Want M.Tech at IIT/NIT?
Yes → GATE. You can skip GRE entirely if staying in India.
- 4Still unsure?
Take GATE in Feb, GRE in summer. Use results + program requirements to decide.
Some students take both—GATE in Feb, GRE in summer—keeping India and abroad options open. If you commit to M.Tech in India, skip GRE entirely. If your target US programs are test-optional, GRE may not be needed at all—see Do You Really Need GRE in 2026?.

FAQ
Is GRE Quant easier than GATE?
Conceptually, yes—GRE Quant is high-school level vs undergraduate engineering depth in GATE. But GRE Quant questions often involve data interpretation and logical reasoning under tight time limits. GATE GA math (probability, permutations) overlaps at similar difficulty. GRE Verbal remains an additional hurdle GATE takers often underestimate.
Can I use GATE score for MS abroad?
Rarely for US/UK—the standard path is GRE plus English proficiency. A few German universities (e.g., TU Munich) and Singapore programs (e.g., NUS) accept GATE for specific engineering tracks. Always verify program-by-program.
Which has better ROI?
IIT M.Tech (typically 2 years): ₹2–5 lakh total, strong India placement, faster domestic payback. US MS (1.5–2 years): ₹50–70L+ sticker price, but TA/RA assistantships can reduce cost by 50–100%. STEM OPT adds up to 3 years of US work authorization vs no visa pathway for domestic M.Tech. Higher global salary ceiling, longer loan repayment. Depends on career geography and field.

Do I need GRE if I'm staying in India?
No. If M.Tech, PSU, or IIT PhD is your path, GATE is sufficient. Skip GRE prep entirely and redirect that time to GATE subject depth.
