What is the Ivy League?
The Ivy League is an NCAA Division I athletic conference founded in 1954. The name predates the conference and originally referred to the old ivy-covered buildings on these campuses.
Today it signals prestige, selectivity, and alumni networks—but it is not a formal academic ranking.
The Ivy League is an athletic conference, not an academic ranking. Department reputation matters far more than the conference label for graduate school. The 8 Ivy League members
Tuition listed is approximate for the 2025–2026 academic year and varies by program. Total cost of attendance (tuition + living) can run $70k–$100k+ per year depending on location.
| University | Location | Grad strengths | Grad tuition (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harvard | Cambridge, MA | Business, law, medicine, public policy | $50k–$75k/yr |
| Yale | New Haven, CT | Law, drama, humanities, SOM MBA | $45k–$70k/yr |
| Princeton | Princeton, NJ | Research PhDs, public policy | $55k–$60k/yr |
| Columbia | New York, NY | Journalism, business, engineering | $50k–$70k/yr |
| UPenn | Philadelphia, PA | Wharton MBA, nursing, engineering | $50k–$75k/yr |
| Brown | Providence, RI | Public health, CS, humanities | $45k–$65k/yr |
| Dartmouth | Hanover, NH | Tuck MBA, small cohort | $55k–$70k/yr |
| Cornell | Ithaca, NY | Engineering, hotel admin, CS, vet | $30k–$60k/yr* |
*Cornell's wide range reflects program differences—Engineering MS vs Johnson MBA vs Hotel Administration. Ithaca living costs are lower than NYC, so a Columbia MS can cost $100k+ total vs $70–80k at Cornell.
Ivy Plus and common confusion
"Ivy Plus" informally includes Stanford, MIT, Chicago, Duke, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, and sometimes Notre Dame—schools with similar selectivity and outcomes but not in the athletic conference.
| School | Ivy League? | Often ranked above Ivies in |
|---|---|---|
| MIT | No | Engineering, CS, physics |
| Stanford | No | CS, AI, entrepreneurship |
| Caltech | No | Pure sciences |
| UC Berkeley | No (public) | CS, EECS research |
| Cornell | Yes | Strong engineering within Ivy set |
Ivy League for graduate school
- CS/AI: Cornell is the strongest Ivy for CS; Harvard/Yale are weaker in CS than MIT/Stanford/Berkeley
- MBA: Wharton (UPenn), Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth Tuck, Yale SOM
- Public Policy: Harvard Kennedy, Princeton SPIA, Columbia SIPA
- Engineering: Cornell, Columbia, UPenn—still behind MIT/Stanford/Georgia Tech for most specializations
MS CS aspirants targeting Cornell CS or Columbia CS should aim for Quant 166+. RN Academy's Quant adaptive drills pinpoint weak areas before you retake.
GRE score expectations by Ivy program
Ranges below reflect self-reported admitted-student profiles and official class statistics—not minimum cutoffs. Highly competitive programs (MS CS, top MBA) sit at the high end; less competitive grad tracks admit lower.
| Program | Typical GRE (V+Q) | Verbal / Quant | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harvard CS (PhD) | N/A | GRE not accepted | PhD only at SEAS CS; MS options are Data Science and CSE |
| Cornell MS CS | 325–332 | 158–162 / 168–169 | ~8–12% admit rate; Quant 169 median typical |
| Columbia MS CS | 322–330 | 158–160 / 166–168 | GRE optional for some tracks; submit if 320+ |
| Columbia MS EE | 320–328 | 155–158 / 166–168 | Quant-heavy; Indian applicants often need 168+ |
| Harvard GSE Ed.M. | 315–325 | 160–165 / 158–162 | Some tracks ~40% admit rate; less STEM-competitive |
| Wharton MBA | 325–335 | 162–168 / 163–170 | GMAT also accepted; ~20–25% admit rate |
Most competitive Ivy MS programs expect GRE Verbal 160+ and Quant 165+ for engineering/CS. Compare your profile against CS program GRE benchmarks and low-GRE alternatives if you are below range.
Ivy League for Indian students
Indian applicants face intense competition at Ivy MS programs. Here is what to expect beyond the brand name.
Admissions reality
- Highly selective programs: MS CS at Cornell receives 5,000+ applications with ~8–12% admit rates for internationals. Harvard CS PhD is closer to 5–8%.
- Less selective tracks exist: Harvard GSE Ed.M. admits ~40% for some programs; Yale MBA ~25%. "Single-digit admit rates" applies to top STEM MS—not every Ivy grad program.
- Standardized tests: TOEFL 100+ or IELTS 7.0+ is typical. GRE matters even at test-optional programs when your profile is otherwise average.
- Deadlines: Most Ivy MS programs have priority deadlines in December. Start GRE prep 4–6 months before—see our study abroad timeline.
Funding: MS vs PhD
- MS funding is limited: Most Ivy MS programs offer less aid than public R1 universities. Budget full sticker price unless you receive a specific award letter.
- Exceptions exist: Cornell MS programs sometimes offer TAships for strong applicants. Columbia GSAS and Dartmouth have fellowship programs for certain departments.
- PhD is different: Ivy PhD programs are more likely fully funded (tuition + stipend). Merit aid for MS is rare but not impossible—apply early and mention funding interest in your SOP.
Visa, OPT, and jobs
- STEM OPT: STEM-designated programs at Ivies give 3-year OPT—but so do non-Ivy STEM programs at UIUC, Georgia Tech, and CMU. The school name does not extend OPT.
- H-1B: Employer-sponsored and lottery-based—the Ivy label does not affect visa eligibility.
- US job market: Recruiters care about skills, internships, and location. NYC (Columbia) vs Ithaca (Cornell) changes your internship pipeline more than the Ivy badge.
Alumni networks in India
Harvard and Wharton have active alumni chapters in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. Columbia and Cornell also travel well in Indian corporate circles.Dartmouth and Brown have smaller but engaged networks.
Build your Ivy shortlist
| Bucket | GRE range | Example schools | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | 330+ | Harvard, Yale, Princeton | Small MS cohorts; outstanding research or work required |
| Match | 320–330 | Cornell, Columbia, UPenn | Add non-Ivy matches: UIUC, CMU, UCLA |
| Safety / value | 310–320 | Dartmouth, Brown | Less competitive programs (e.g., Brown Master's in Data Science); also consider Georgia Tech, UIUC |
If you want MS CS with GRE 320+, consider Cornell, Columbia, and also add UIUC, CMU, Stanford (reach), and UCLA (match).
Is Ivy League worth the cost?
For most Indian MS students, a top public flagship (UIUC, Georgia Tech, UT Austin) or Ivy Plus tech school (CMU, Stanford) beats a weaker Ivy program on ROI. FAQ
Is Cornell the easiest Ivy to get into?
Cornell has the largest undergraduate class and strong engineering. Its MS programs—especially CS—remain highly selective for internationals (~8–12% admit rate).
Do Ivies give scholarships to international MS students?
Limited merit aid overall. PhD programs are more likely funded.
Some departments (Cornell, Dartmouth) offer fellowships or TAships—budget full sticker price unless you receive a specific award letter.
Does Ivy League matter for H-1B?
No. H-1B is employer-sponsored and lottery-based.
The school name does not affect visa eligibility or OPT length.
If a program is test-optional, should I still submit a GRE score?
Yes—unless your profile is outstanding without it. At test-optional programs, a 320+ still helps funding and admits.
Omit scores below 305 and strengthen SOP, GPA, and experience instead. See universities without GRE requirement.
